You’re going on a cross-country trip. Airplane, train, bus, car, or bike?
A road trip for us would usually involve traveling in an unglamours fasion driving the circus truck or towing trailers from one event to the next.
However……if we existed in a magical world where time and a long open road stretched endlessly ahead of us , we would surely choose to travel by circus bike .
It would be hard to choose a favourite , but our good old stilt bikes would be an obvious choice . These hybrid stilt bikes , or should we say high-brid, were created from 2 of our old mountain bikes , a broken road bike , some hooters, bells and the creative genius of two of our “organic mechanic” friends Tim and Scott.
The good old fashioned Sturney Archer 3 speed gear system will see us through the trip , giving our leg muscles a true work out and hopefully bringing a smile to people’s faces as we ride past .
No circus bike road trip would be complete without a unicycle.
If getting supremely fit was the ultimate goal then Unicycles are the go-to choice . They do take a while to learn. Whilst learning them be prepared to fall off many times , be prepared to be frustrated , be prepared for the odd emotional melt down, but the end result is worth every mishap. You will feel like you are flying down the open road.
As an added bonus you don’t need to worry about brakes , or handle bars and you will be riding hands free
Our ringmaster would definitely want to ride some of the way on his trusty Penny Farthing . This modern day Quax version is splendid fun . You do have to master the technique of jumping in to the saddle whilst scooting along , but once you have nailed it there is nothing to stop you .
A very practical option for a leisurely road trip is the circus trike and trailer . This has the obvious advantage of the trailers capacity to store your one-person mini big top , bed of nails, and a custard pie or two .
The possibilites are numerous, we have our yellow peril cyco-cycles, such joyous and simple hands free bikes , with their passenger footplate you can easily give a lift to a fellow clown or acrobat to add even more joy to your jouney.
Back in the real world of course, time between events is short, often we are packing up from one event and traveling straght to the next, or heading back to the yard to pick up more equipment. Nevertheless…….
rest assured when you are in the circus zone you can be in a world of imagination, where the open road stretches timelessly ahead and any thing is possible .
